Our denomination is stubbornly grassroots, and we leave a LOT up to the individual congregations. In some cases, this means that each one can decide how they will reinvent the wheel! In other cases, they are given wise guidelines and support. Ten years ago, SMUUF completed one of the tasks that rests solely with the congregation: you made a minister. Rev. Nell Newton completed her ministerial internship at SMUUF in 2015 and has wandered far and wide since then. Most recently, she served the church in San Antonio, but is now a free-range preacher. She lives in Austin with her family, three cats, a flock of chickens, and an overgrown garden.
