“I can tell this was made with love”–  Food Healers hear from patrons at the Southside Center on Monday

Food Healers  had a wonderful day  serving soup, lentils and baked apples with raisins and couscous on Monday  Jan. 13 at the Southside Center in San Marcos for people who are food-insecure. They loved it and we loved them. Servers from SMUUF Food Healers this week were Becky Allen, Judy Telford, Rasmey Raymond, Barbara Jacobson, and Lisa Cradit.

One young man, James, who frequently helps out, said, ” I make some vegetable soup, but this is the best!”  James keeps everyone entertained and laughing; when he and Becky Allen were talking about the Unity Stew, Becky told him that the Stew has all the daily requirements, is physician approved, and doesn’t have ultra-processed additives. James replied with a laugh, “So if we eat it, we won’t go kicking and jerking, right?” Another patron said, “I can tell it was made with love.” The patrons are always very polite and appreciative, and it is a joy to serve them. Please consider signing up and enjoying the company.

On the second Monday of each month from 4:00-5:00pm, SMUUF Food Healers serve fruit and a main dish, using a recipe from the Universal Meals program, to people who are food-insecure.  Universal Meals recipes avoid the top nine food allergens in the US.  We have fun and are grateful to be able to provide this nourishing food. In December, we served warm and filling Unity Stew. Links to the recipes we use are included on the  Signup Genius page. Come join us at the Southside Community Center in San Marcos and help the community as well.

For more information and to sign up using this Signup Genius page.or ask Lisa (lcradit@tlu.edu) to sign you up.  We love having more volunteers joining us!  Our next serving opportunity is February 10.

Note: The Southside Center provided a warm sleeping space for about 50 people during the recent low temperatures.  The center is currently only taking contributions of coats, blankets, and other warm clothing and/or financial contributions, but cannot take anything else (no furniture or other household items). To donate those items and other clothing items, please contact the  St. Vincent de Paul location in San Marcos.
