Welcome to the San Marcos Unitarian Universalist Fellowship!

SMUUF Invites You to Participate in the MLK Day Walk on January 20th!

As is SMUUF’s tradition every year, our SMUUF congregation is invited to participate in the MLK March / Walk on MLK Day.  This year, MLK Day will be celebrated on Monday, January 20 at 9:30, beginning with a Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Crossroads Memorial at the corner of MLK Drive and LBJ Drive in San Marcos.

Our SMUUF On-Site Parade Manager, Joel Johnson, is unavailable that day, so his wife Laura Johnson will be Acting On-Site Parade Manager, as she has generously done before.  Laura will probably have her two daughters, Alice and Robyn with her (if school is out).  Also, assisting will be Shannon FitzPatrick, SMUUF Social Justice Co-Chair.  So look for these two when you arrive and “check in” with them.

Laura and Shannon will have the large SMUUF banner, that they will appreciate having help carrying.  Please take a photo with all SMUUF participants behind or beside the banner that we can share with others.  This is a “Walk” and no motorized vehicles are allowed, and no bicycles or skateboards.  But, parents are invited to pull a wagon with young kids riding if they want.

Following the Wreath Laying Ceremony, there will be a silent Walk through the Historic Dunbar Neighborhood to the Historic Hays County Courthouse, located at 111 East San Antonio Street, where a brief Program will take place.  A Reception will occur following the Program at the Dunbar Recreation Center, located at 801 MLK Drive, which will include free food and music.

This is the 21st year that the Dunbar Heritage Association has hosted the MLK Day March and SMUUF has been an active participant to show our support!  MLK Day is celebrated every year on the third Monday of January to honor the life and legacy of civil rights leader Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  It’s a day that celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought hope and healing to America.  SMUUF is proud to be a part of this celebration!

Be sure to wear your bright yellow SMUUF / UU T-shirts, if you have one!

For more information, and to “check in” to tell that you will be participating in the MLK March (although you can also just “show up”) contact Jeannie Lewis, SMUF Off-Site Parade Manager and Social Justice Co-Chair, who registers SMUUF for each Parade, promotes and recruits, and provides information.  Contact Jeannie at jeannie@centurytel.net or (512) 353-2872 (for calls), or (512) 393-1332 (for texts).
