Each of us is carrying some of the past along with us – it has shaped us and guides us and can be helpful. It might also be like carrying a small stone that was a pretty souvenir at the beginning of the hike, but becomes heavy and ugly as you stagger up another hill. As a faith that embraces change, we must get comfortable with making the choices of what stories and theologies we carry forward and what we leave behind.
Rev. Nell Newton completed her ministerial internship at SMUUF in 2015 and has wandered far and wide since then. Most recently she served the church in San Antonio, but is now a free-range preacher. She lives in Austin with her family, three cats, a flock of chickens, and an overgrown garden.
