Our Women’s UU Friendship Society (WUUFS) will be meeting this Sunday at 11:30 a.m. in the FCC Conference Room before church.
This Sunday, Shannon FitzPatrick will continue her discussion of the abortion issue, beginning with the book Roe vs. Wade by Marian Faux. It will include both the back story of how the case came about and the role of the Unitarians in making this happen, as well as what the future could be for this vital issue for women.
Some questions to think about:
- Who has superior rights? The mother or the fetus (or blastocyst in Alabama)?
- Does or should a viable fetus have any rights?
- How far can we apply a right to privacy?
- Does Free Speech apply talking to our physicians (see Ken Paxton and Trans kids)
- One of the key arguments in Roe was poverty. How different would the case be if McCorvy was wealthy?
- When are death certificate appropriate for a fetus?
- How does the 9th Amendment play out here? What must be balanced?
- How do you get the Texas Legislature to listen to the will of the majority?
- What role does judicial reform play in today’s fight? (see judge John Devine on the TX Supreme Court who brags about being arrested 37 times during anti-abortion protests. What chance will women have with cases in front of his court?)
Feel free to bring a snack to share — appreciated but not required. Anyone who self-identifies as female is welcome to attend. Contact Priscilla, at PLeder@cox.net for more information or to make comments.
