Voices at the Table – Confrontation at the Border: Gov. Abbott’s Showdown with the Federal Government on Immigration Policy – May 5th at 1:00 p.m.

A panel of Texas community activists and immigration attorneys will review actions Gov. Abbott and the Texas Legislature have taken to discourage the entry of immigrants seeking asylum at the Texas border, including Operation Lone Star, the deployment of the National Guard to Maverick County at a cost of more than $10 billion, and the laying of concertina wire in the Rio Grande to deter swimmers.  Panelists will provide an update on the status of SB4, which would allow any law enforcement personnel to arrest and charge anyone suspected of crossing the border illegally.  In addition to providing an overview of these actions, panelists will discuss the conditions confronting immigrants on both sides of the border, provide information about resources available to help address the issues and answer questions about how we can help.

Panelists:

Eduardo M. Flores, Attorney specializing in Removal Defense Representation
Juanita Martínez, Community Activist, Eagle Pass TX
Peggy Morton, Co-founder of the Austin Sanctuary Network
Karen Muñoz, Criminal Defense Attorney, San Marcos TX
Rick Treviño, Criminal Defense Attorney, San Marcos, TX

Coming Up: Our May 12 service will be a Mother’s Day Flower Communion. The Flower Communion is a UU tradition celebrated in many congregations worldwide. Bring a flower to share—from your garden, HEB, or anywhere else. We’ll have flowers available if you forget or don’t have access.
